Kasey Michaels is a well-known master of the Regency Romance, but she is also a dab hand at droll Contemporaries. "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" is one of my favorites - not just for this author or this genre of Romance, but of all Romances I have read. Certain aspects of this book have aged awkwardly, but at the heart of it, the center still holds together all sweet and gooey and just delicious. The story is about heiress Shelby, who feels railroaded by her brother and social set into a loveless legacy marriage to a twit named Parker. She watches her chamber maid's passionate affair with a local boy from afar, longing for the emotional freedom she perceives the girl is enjoying. And she decides that if the other half gets to live with love, she wants to know for herself if the trade off is worth it, so with the blessing of her ne'er do well uncle, she goes for it. Quinn, the hero, is one of the partners of D&S Security, and he has a bargain with his partner Grady - Grady handles the rich clients and Quinn handles everything else. This is not just because Grady is from that world, but also because Quinn has unfortunate history with it and doesn't want to deal with it. Unfortunately for him, when Shelby lights out for the territories, Grady has a broken arm and so Quinn is maneuvered into going to track her down. When he finds her, he can't believe what he's seeing. I won't spoil anymore except to say the rest of the story is about how two people who are lying to each other knowingly manage to fall in love and make friends in a town full of people who are also not supposed to know who they are, but come on. Can't Take My Eyes Off of You was an enjoyable, quick read, with some really delightful, fun parts. Not exactly laugh out loud, but definitely enough to bring a small smile to my face. However, I felt much of the character crafting was stereotypical and the story line was very predictable (which probably isn't surprising, given that it is a romance).
Overall, I enjoyed the story for what it was--a bit of escapist, romantic fluff--but I don't have any great urge to read the other books in the series.
Having said that, I am sure committed romance readers will love Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.
Note The story does have a couple of slightly steamy love scenes which may not suit readers who prefer "clean" romances.
I start this review by saying, I am a dyed in the wool Kasey Michaels' fan. I love her work and I love her style and her witty, wacky, wonderful dialogue, but this one, for me was not up her usual standard. It was a great read just not the kind I am use to seeing from her. I also, must say I really prefer her Regency Romance Novels or Novelettes. So, while, if she wrote I will read it. I found this one not quite to her normal potential.
The hero, Quinn Delaney, was I thought a bit of a reverse snob in that he hated the rich and repulsive as he calls them. He particularly did not like our Shelby Taite and her whole wacked out family of Ritzy Titzy folks. Yet, he is suddenly smitten by her charms as she does a runaway to rags. I did love the character of Uncle Alfred, because I think every rich familty needs one at least.
It was a good read, just not the great one I am use to seeing from our Kasey. That, however, should not stop you from reading this one. If you've never seen her work this one is a good start because you know they are only getting better. If you already are a fan this one will in no way make you change your mind about the author.

This is an excellent book, and it is a full-length novel. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys romance novels with a real story to tell.
Shelby Taite, through no fault of her own, has been raised in the indulgent life of an heiress. She has been the dutiful daughter, always doing what was expected of her, including agreeing to marry Parker, a perfect match for her except for the fact she doesn't love him. Quinn Delaney doesn't care much for the rich and repulsive, as he likes to call them, and is less than thrilled to be saddled with the job of serving as Shelby's bodyguard. But there's more to Shelby than meets the eye, as Quinn is about to learn.
Shelby is a very likable and believable heroine. Quinn is hunky, handsome, and sexy. Every character has their own endearing and interesting quirks, including two 'bad guys' who turn out to be not so bad at all.
I have found another author I really admire and I will be reading more of her books. There are a few typos that should have been caught by the editors, but I love the writer's style.
This is the best book that I have read in a long time. OMG the jokes, I was dying. Mork, Al (thanks for that), potatoe. Kasey has a great sense of humor with dry wit. The storyline is brilliant, captivating, romantic and entertaining. The characters are charming and funny. Quinn is just adorable, charismatic and amusing. Shelby is strong, independent and charming. Uncle Alfred is a trip. The supporting characters beautifully spread the laughs and drama. This book should go straight to the top of your TBR list.
This is NOT Kasey Michaels at her best. She is much better as a "historical" or "regency" author -- her books aren't true historicals because her characters behave in anachronistic ways, but they are fun, particularly her early alphabet novels. I haven't liked her more recent, longer novels as much. This contemporary novel gives me the same feeling -- a light read, but nothing really to love or hate here. There's a lot of sexual heat and sex itself, which Michaels includes in her longer books as well. The runaway heroine becomes more likable as the novel progresses, and the love story moves along at a similar pace, though it begins mostly as sexual attraction. There isn't a lot of depth here, but it's good for an afternoon read if you like this sort of thing.
