''A Measure of Blood' is a riveting story about a seriously disturbed (though somehow likable usually) man and the little boy he believes is his own. Viewpoint switches often, but it is not distracting, and when it comes to the kid, which is where so many writers fail, she knocks it out of the park. He ACTS and TALKS like an eight year old.

Characters are well drawn and real. Writing is a very simplistic style, which is usually exactly what I like, but there were a few times I longed for a few more compound sentences and description.

This one barely, barely misses the fifth star because it drags a bit before the middle, which is where the real action begins. I'm going over to order another one by this author now.

A detective gets attached to a case where a little boy is left orphaned and witnesses the person who kills his mom. He is determined to find the killer and make sure this child ends up in a great home.

Although you know who the killer is from the beginning and are reading his every move, this book was still interesting as you had no clue when he would be entering the scene and creating havoc! I read this book in two sittings, it kept me guessing from beginning to end! As any who dun it does, this book took some fantastic turns and when to a place that I couldn't predict and loved it!
I stayed up too late because I couldn't stop reading. The story carries you along. Her books are intriguing and would make good movies. I love all her characters. They're like family to me now.
Matt is a young boy who has seen what no child should ever have to see, the death of his mother by murder. He’s now obsessed with who killed her and who is his father. There are no other living relatives and so it’s a toss of the dice whether Matt will be taken into the custody of Child Protective Services or whether a nearby couple, who have long yearned for an adopted child, will temporarily take Matt in as a foster child. Richard Christie’s heart is tied up in this case as he searches for the murderer, tries to do the best for Matt, and remembers the fact that he has no idea where his own father is.
Matt has a great memory and little by little remembers the conversation or argument between the man who was with his mother right before she died and the type of car that the man was leaning on. He’s very much into computers and video games, and they are his sole consolation for a while at least. But then Matt overhears other conversations and learns that the police know who his real father is, and he wonders why his father wouldn’t want to know or be connected with him. It’s almost too much to handle! His search becomes an obsession!
Meanwhile, another man believes Matt is his son and gradually also becomes obsessed with getting to know him and have a father-son relationship. To say more would be to spoil the plot replete with multiple twists and turns. The reader knows who each character really is but in no way can predict what will happen as two men vie for possession of Matt as a son, a couple gets to be loving parents, and some relationships become confused and then clarified among the detectives trying to solve this crime and another crime to follow.
Kathleen George has crafted a heart-rending mystery or crime story that has the reader rooting for Matt and some other characters at every turn of the pages. There’s no repetition in this novel which so often spoils a good story and the characters are unusually engaged in the outcome for this grieving, confused child! While there are some background pieces told throughout the tale, there’s no overdose of psychology or psychiatry which adds even more to the credibility of the guy who has caused all this mayhem. Finely done, Kathleen George!!!
Even though it easily stands on its own as a fascinating story, "A Measure of Blood" is the seventh Richard Christie novel, and gives us a little more of the lives of Richard Christie and his team. Kathleen George deftly weaves in details, picking up threads spun in the earlier novels, bringing the reader deeper into the world of Pittsburgh's homicide investigators.

"A Measure of Blood", at its deepest level, is about the bond of blood between a father and a son. Maggie Brown wants to bypass that bond and build a life with her son where there is no father, and no need for a father. In many ways she is successful her son is healthy, handsome, highly intelligent and loves her with his whole heart. But already, at age seven, he is asking questions about his father, wondering who he is and why he never comes around. Matthew Brown longs for that mysterious father/son bond he has never known.

When his mother is murdered by a man who claims to be Matt's father, the boy is thrown into a confusing spiral of grief and longing. Richard Christie immediately recognizes that finding a way to help Matt into a new life is just as important as catching the man who murdered his mother.

The identity of the murderer is never a mystery to the reader. Part of the narrative is told from his point of view and we learn that this case has no clear cut black and white, no dastardly villain, only another lost soul longing for a magical father/son relationship.

Richard Christie is reminded of his own father, who supposedly died when he was a child, and he begins his own search to find out if what his mother told him was really true. Christie's wife, Marina, the star of the first Christie novel, "Taken", is given a larger role here and there are hints that she may be even more important in novels yet to be written. Every member of the homicide team is a real person with families, troubles and heartbreak of their own.

Bonus! The orphaned children from "The Odds" return and we hear a little about how their lives are going, with possibly a hint that we may see them again. Altogether a satisfying and fun read.
I was a little thrown off by the first person writing style but an overall good book and great story.
Enjoyed this book - good story.
Interesting characters. I really cared what happened to them. Appealing little boy. Likeable cops. Nice interpersonal relationships to add interest.
