The writing in this book is as good as the first, but the pace and the story didn't intrigue me as much as Book 1. It was still an enjoyable read, but I missed the fun pacing and there wasn't as much humor. It's definitely worth reading and I look forward to the next book.

A great debut novel with loads of laughs and dark humour. The plot, although it takes a little while to get going, is full of twists, turns and surprises. The characters are well thought-out with some great dialogue. Quite a profound book in its own way.
The clichéd detective vibe absolutely made this story for me. Hard sci-fi with tongue-in-cheek "hard-boiled dick" thrown in, makes this something even fans of the 1940's detective noir can enjoy.
A quick read and easy enough to follow, I especially loved Joshua's eternally confrontational relationship with the cops. However, I did figure out the big secret" from the ending about halfway through.
Regardless, 5 stars for a great first effort. I will be watching Mr. Lingane.

As much a witty comedy at times as it is Supernatural Thriller it should appeal to a broad base of readers. Wow... I just finished the trilogy and it was the craziest, most unique story I've read ever. Have to say this was really good. Well written, storyline moved along well, kept me interested in the character. Funny in the right places. A good read.
I really enjoyed this book! It was unique and very interesting. The characters were very real and believable. I loved the uniqueness of the personalities and the believability of the dialogue. I would certainly recommend this book to others. In fact I think I'll start now. Read this book! It rocks!
Joshua Richards, a PI, has a problem in that all his clients are dying. Throw in an alternate world, sinister figures and the engine! you have a complex plot about a pre-destined world. I liked the concept of the story. It's been done before, but the approach was unique. It has clever twists & turns along the way and the build up of the main characters was done well. The writing style is very good and the action moves right along and though I thought I saw the ending coming, I was blown away! Good, fun reading that I would definitely recommend to any Sci-Fi buff.
Joshua Richards, a private detective, was a frustrated soul. He looked carefully at life around him, at how the population was controlled, at how they were happy with life as long as every day was the same. And it was. They loved it. He hated it.
A mass of people living a pre-destined life. An automatic life. A life free of decision making. Joshua found himself reluctantly inhabiting this life.
But there were others, sinister figures inhabiting a twilight world. And there was the engine. A broken, dying engine that was unable to operate effectively after the exile of the last leader. An engine that directed the fate of all. An engine that seemed incapable of serving two leaders. An engine that could not be allowed to die. That was the problem that faced the sinister figures.
Joshua gets on with his job of detecting, whilst the sinister men get on with trying to sort out the malfunctioning engine.
Two parallel worlds operating on the same star, drawing closer and closer together until they collide. Will that lead to total devastation - or a status quo restored.
This is a complex plot which evolves in a form that emulates both The Prisoner and Dick Tracy. It maintains good measures of humour and horror throughout and provides an excellent read.
I received this book free to read and review.
On the face of it this is a story about a detective Joshua Richards who although not seeming very interested in what he is doing solves cases and "bumbles" along, in fact everyone seems to various degrees follow a predefined direction just doing their job and following the rules to the letter. However the truth is very different as Joshua seems to be invincible, and emerges unscathed from almost certain death. I thought for a while that all of the characters were part of an artificial reality as there kept being computer references such as []-$mkdir alt.reality again things were not as I expected. The whole story is laced with humour and there were many interesting characters, I particularly liked Pete the bar keeper and Damien the hacker. Near the end when I thought I knew where the plot was going there was yet another twist and all was explained.
The writing in this book is as good as the first, but the pace and the story didn't intrigue me as much as Book 1. It was still an enjoyable read, but I missed the fun pacing and there wasn't as much humor.
It's definitely worth reading and I look forward to the next book.
