AWOKEN was a fast-paced fantasy novel with lots of action. Michael is an orphan who has moved from foster home to foster home. He is is guarded and tends to react first with anger. He also hears music from rocks and always has. He is settling in at his new home when, one night, he notices a strange cat seemingly watching him and some little albino men coming out from under the porch to fight with the cat. He is freaked out but even more freaked out when one of the little men comes to his room and convinces him to drink from a strange stone cup and accept a strange necklace. It changes his relationship with stone and dumps him in the middle of a war between the People and the Ven.After being warned to avoid the brown and the green, Michael goes to park and winds up running into some human bullies. He is rescued by Lina who is a poor-little-rich girl but just as tough, guarded and angry as Michael is. In the fight, he loses the necklace and Lina finds it. She rinses off the clay coating to find a jewel in a metal setting which bonds itself to her hand and begins changing her DNA.
Michael goes to his friend Diggs who is a drifter living by the river. Diggs knows what Michael is facing and together they are determined to get to the People who might be able to get the jewel off Lina and stop her mutation into something else. They also take one of the People with them that Michael names Jericho. The four of them have to defeat the evil scientist who wants to change the world and his hybrid mutants.
Middle graders will enjoy this story. While I didn't like either Michael or Lina very much at the beginning because of their anger, I grew to like them and feel for the difficult decisions that both of them had to make. Short chapters would make it a candidate as a classroom read-aloud.

Wow! AWOKEN - What a ride! The action and world building had me turning pages and the characters had me cheering! What more could you want for a rocking middle grade read? Bravo to Timothy Miller on his debut novel.
What a great book. A fascinating story line. Left me with questions....what was so different about Michael....why him? You have to write another book Tim......call it the prequel of The People. Looking forward to discovering the mystery behind the book.
Awoken really surprised me, I really was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did!
Firstly it began in a really interesting way, which I certainly was not expecting.
It drew me in from the beginning and even though Michael isn't the type of character I can usually relate to, I found that I grew to really connect with him.
Awoken opened dramatically, enticing me with curiosity to gather more information about what is in store for Michael and what the doll men are up to, as well as, why Michael is so important to them.
I found it increasingly easy to dive into the world, especially the more that I read it.
I enjoyed the way that the character relationships were formed and maintained, the way that they interacted with each other and grew as friends as well as people in themselves.
The detail given to setting and both plot and character development was lovely, events flowed into each other without leaving any dull gaps in the excitement.
I found that towards the end, just after the journey to the final confrontation, that the pace suddenly picked up and that a lot of information and action was packed into a few small chapters. This made it very challenging for me personally to create connections to the new characters introduced, the ending felt a bit rushed and as though the author tried to hurriedly tie up loose ends.
Overall I really enjoyed the world that was created and wish that there were more books set in this world, the doll men were hilarious at times and I adored their antics as well as Michael's responses to them!
